JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox

「Mei,

「Mei,

「JOBI!」

「Mei,

JOBI the Moon Fox

Prologue 6 - Candy and Memory

I didn't stop until I couldn't ran anymore. By that time, my tears had stopped.

'Oh...? Why did I cry?'

I was so confused.

I headed back home and saw a can of candy. I had a strange feeling of losing something, yet I couldn't recall. I didn't know who put the candy here, but I feel like it had been put here long ago.

I was too tired from running so I sat on my bed and stared at the candy until I fell asleep...

'Mei, don't you have fox stories to share today?'

My classmate asked when I attended school the next day.

'What fox stories...?' I couldn't get it.

'Well, you finally decided to grow up! We gotta celebrate!! Haha!' The strange manner of my classmate confused me.

Felt like I hadn't been so carefree for long time.

I replaced my desk and bed sheet with new ones, also decorated the window with cute curtains in order to block the over-shiny moonlight. The room was so refreshing.

But I left the can of candy in the same place.

With unknown reasons, I felt like some important connections would be gone if I put it away.

Maybe this can was the only thing left...

A year passed by, the moon was full tonight.

I stayed in bed as I had catch a cold. I went to take some candy from the desk after taking medicine that was too plain.

Suddenly an unnatural flow of wind blew into my room, followed by bright moonlight. I felt like I had seen this scenery before, my brain was flashing with some memories.

'Mei, can you see it? I did it!'

I heard a familiar voice. This voice recalled pieces of memories that were long forgotten.

These pieces were put together and formed my most cherished memory!

How... how could I forget?

'Where are you?'

I rushed on to the street in haste before tidying up my clothes to look for the owner of the voice. Yet It could not be found.

I was too frustrated to go on, and when I was just about to knee down and cry, a little girl ran into me.

'Hey, can you see that? A fox was casting magic under moonlight!'

So she could see the fox!!

I looked at the moon that was fuller then usual and discovered a tiny light tunnel linking to the mountain located in the back of my school. The memories flashed by.

I grabbed her hand and took her to where 'it' was when 'it' first landed on earth.

I could recognised 'it' from distance - a dear friend that was forgotten by the weak and selfish me year ago.

'JOBI!'

'Mei, finally, you are here.'

I was nearly out of breath but still rushed to it at full blast, hoping to gain back the time that was lost.

However when I saw JOBI's body, I realised it's too late - It was transparent.

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox

「Mei......? 」JOBI

「Mei!

JOBI the Moon Fox
Prologue 5 - Powerless Persistence and Ruthless Words

'Moonlight tunnel? How does that exist?'

'Where is the fox? Stop lying!'

'Grow up, Mei!'

All theses years, I had heard uncountable words like these. I wanted to let more people know the existence of the foxes, yet no one was able to see them, thus no one believed me.

I finally came to understand the helplessness JOBI the King once felt - I couldn't earned any recognition for what I had been believing for years.

I was so discouraged, even started doubting...

'Mei, Why do you persist to achieve the will of JOBI the King so reluctantly? We are having a good life, aren't we?'

Newborn JOBI was laying on the floor in my room carelessly, eating candies while reading. This unrestrained fox didn't have the tendency to inherit the belief of its past generation.

Three years had passed since JOBI came to my home. It had grown a lot, with the height almost as same as JOBI the King. It was a fast-learner, it knew how to take care of itself well.

The only thing that didn't change, was that it still craved for the candies I gave it when we first met.

Thence, in order to motivate it to work with me, I decided to use candies as a bite.

'JOBI, I would like you to do something for me. If you promise me, you will be given candies with the amount of a whole month, how about that?' I put a big can of candies equaled half of my spending money for a month in front of JOBI.

'OHHHHH SURE! What do you want me to do?' JOBI's eyes were brightened with excitement.

'I want you to open the moonlight tunnel and let everyone sees it. Even they can't see you, they will trust me as the moon will become fuller and brighter oddly!' This had to work.

However JOBI was cooled off after hearing my plan.

'But I don't know how to open it...I'm not the king.' JOBI seemed troubled.

'You have the blood of Moon Fox like JOBI the King, there must be a way you can do that. Please try. I can't think of other ways to let them believe me... You have to help me!' I did realised I was being unreasonable, yet I was exhausted by the failures I had faced these three years.

JOBI seemed to know.

'Mei, what you wanted me to do, is to fulfil the wish of JOBI the King? Or just for yourself?' Its questioning touched my raw nerve.

I hated to admit it. I was so persistent and had put much effort in making others to believe the existence of the foxes, still I got no retribution at all, the doubts inside my heart started to spread.

'Fine! Forget it if you are not helping me! I had a feeling about it anyway, the reason I can see foxes others cannot see...is not because I'm unique...'

'Mei...?' JOBI stared at me like looking at a stranger.

'Maybe...maybe the 'foxes' were merely my imaginary friends to comfort myself as I wasn't able to make friends in my childhood!! Moonlight tunnel, JOBI the King, and you...'

'Mei! I...' JOBI attempted to grab my hand, but I flung its paw away.

'DO NOT EXIST!'

At that moment, I was too wrapped up in myself to consider the feeling of JOBI. The unsatisfactory piled up in my heart pushed the ruthless words out of my lips.

I ran away from home.

Then my life went back to 'normal'.

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox
Prologue 4 - The Promise Continued and the Newborn Fox

I rid on the moonlight tunnel to the moon again, this reminded me of the past.

'After I have disappeared, years later in here, another fox will be born. May I ask you to name it?'

I didn't forgot the promise made five years ago.

A little black fox was sitting quietly on the mountain we said goodbye.

I walked in to the front of the tiny fox, it wasn't afraid. It merely stared at me.

'Your name is... JOBI.'

After I named the fox, incredible thing happened - it stood up after hearing its name, waved its tail and stirred the air. The wind blown its fur and turned it into shimmering purple. It's like the ugly duckling turning into a swan. Such fascinating.

'OHHHHHH!' Newborn JOBI jumped and ran like an energetic child.

'Hello JOBI, I'm Mei.' I introduced myself to JOBI 'again'.

'I'm starving, Mei. I want to eat!' JOBI had a pair of crystal-clear eyes brightened by purity. It's voice was louder than JOBI the King - it hadn't know much about curtesy though.

'Oh? I have a few candies with me only...Would you like me to go home and get you something while you stay here and wait?' I wondered what a fox might like to eat.

'I can go with you, can't I?' JOBI took my candies and threw them into its mouth unexpectedly. I was at a loss as to what to do with its frankness.

Yet, this candid little fox was not annoying, even cute. Also, it'd be cruel to leave it alone on the moon like JOBI the king.

Speaking of that, I had probably made up my mind at the moment I saw the moonlight tunnel.

'Foxes and humans can be friends.'

I wished I could pass on the will of JOBI the King - to look for people who could see the foxes and willed to be friends with them.

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox
Prologue 3 - The Proof of Existence and the Request from the King

'I'd be gone very soon, probably, haha!'

JOBI the King pretended to be delightful while telling me a harsh truth.

'Gone...? What does that mean? Are you dying?' 7-year-old me was not able to understand at all.

'Foxes like us gain energy from the memories of each other. In another words, once we have been forgotten, we will not be able to gain energy anymore. Our bodies will become transparency... then disappear.' The transparent part on JOBI the King's body was spreading.

'So... so how much time is left until you disappear completely? How... how can I help you?' I asked in panic. It's my first encounter with 'disappearing fox thing'.

'Dear, you don't have to do anything for me. I am contented, as I am able to prove my belief before I am gone. Thank you for being my friend! But I haven't known your name yet!' JOBI the King held his hand towards me.

'I'm Mei...' I grabbed his hand eagerly, fearing that I wouldn't be able to touch him again if I missed it.

'Hello, Mei. Hope you will have a great day here! I promised to take you on a tour in my kingdom, Let's not waste anymore time!' JOBI the King said with excitement, without any bit of sadness.

JOBI the King and I visited the largest valley and the highest mountain, also played the very first human-vs-fox hide and seek on the moon.

By the end of the day , we sat on a hill side by side and talked.

'Mei, I wished we could spend more time together, it's so sad that we had got only one day. Would you like to come again and play with me?' The voice if JOBI the King started to become unclear.

'But you...'

I wondered if it's my tears or JOBI the King were almost gone, I could merely see its body.

'After I have disappeared, years later in here, another fox will be born. May I ask you to name it?' JOBI the King hold my hands again to let me know its existence.

'Sure, I promised. I will be back!' I forced a smile.

'Thank you, Mei. You are a very unique girl. I'm so glad to meet you, please, never forget me!!Bye bye,..' JOBI the King waved me goodbye before it turned into a light ball and led me back to the moonlight tunnel. Finally it disappeared completely.

This was my first encounter with a fox.

After getting back on earth, my health became better. I tried to go to school with other kids. I felt like I was reborn when I stepped out of my room.

The only thing that never changed was I would still look at the full and bright moon every night.

Five years later, on my 12th birthday, I saw the moon tunnel again.

JOBI the Moon Fox 序章 2 - Mei 與 JOBI 國王

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox
Prologue 2 - Mei and JOBI the King

Unlike what was written in the textbook, I was able to breath on the moon, the gravity was almost the same as the earth.

A fox was greeting me.

It's a bit different from the foxes on earth - it has yellowish fur and was standing with two legs like humans. It was wearing a tiny clown also a red cape that made it look like a king.

'Welcome to the Moon. I'm the king of this planet, my name is JOBI the king.' The fox stated its identity again.

Oddly, I didn't see other foxes.

'Is there only you?'

'I lived here with my people before, yet they have left me... That's why I was bored.' JOBI the king said with a bit of loneliness.

'Why did they leave?' I asked sympathetically.

'Few decades ago, the humans on earth developed advanced technology and found their way to the moon, which freaked my people out as they were worried that the human kinds would take over the moon and destroy our habitats.' JOBI the king took out a national flag I had seen on tv and books and started telling the past of its country.

'So...why didn't you leave with them?' I was 7 at that year, yet I couldn't help feeling guilty when I heard the past of JOBI the king.

'I don't think we have to leave. We, the moon foxes, are born with the ability to communicate with humans, meaning we can befriend them. I decided to stay here a prove it.' JOBI the king sounded so confident.

'Is there anyone... besides me came here before?' I looked around, wondering if I would meet 'my kind'.

'Well, a few human had received our messages in these few decades but they didn't trust us. Then the last few foxes who stayed left.' JOBI the king said helplessly.

'Why would that... Then I'll be your friend!! Is there any way you can ask your people to come back?' I suggested, hoping it could reunite with its own kind.

'Oh Thank you. Unfortunately I don't have the time.' JOBI the king took off its cape.

'Eh? What the...?' I was shocked.

Unexpectedly, its chest was transparent, and that transparency part seemed to be spreading...

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox

JOBI the Moon Fox
Prologue 1 - The Moon and the Girl

'It's so boring on the Moon!'

On the night of my 7th birthday, when I was leaning on the windowsill looking at the globose moon, I suddenly heard a voice I had never heard before.

My name was Mei. I was not able to go to school like other kids as I was too weak and sick, the only thing I could do was to stay in bed, waited for the doctor and private tutor to come.

Yet, my life wasn't dull. I enjoyed reading alone, also I had a companion that warmed me at heart in every cold and silent nights- the bright moon outside my window.

'Would you like to visit my kingdom?'
I kept hearing the voice from the Moon. It's full moon tonight - the shimmering moonlight filled my room.
I peeked out of the window, looked around to seek for the owner of the voice, however no one was found.
'It's me! HERE! OVER HERE!'

As the voice was becoming clearer, I saw a shadow waving at me on the moon.

'Who are you?' I asked curiously.

'I'm the the King of the Moon. I'm so bored, if you may come and be my friend, I will give you a tour on the moon, how about that?' The King said in a deep voice, yet he sounded like a little boy.
'How can I get there?' I was excited as I could never imagine that's I'd be able to land on the moon.

'So you are willing to come? Great!! I will place the moonlight tunnel on your windows, just relax and give me a second!'

The moon became brighter and fuller then then usual, even lightened my room up.

Suddenly, my body floated in the air and was dragged out by an unknown force to the moon.

'Look at me, don't look away!' The King instructed, I was too afraid to look at the views. As i was getting closer to the shadow that was talking to me all the time, I found out that it was nothing like the fat old gentleman with white moustache in my imagination.

It's.... fox.

That's the first time I landed on the moon through the moonlight tunnel.

SORA's Part-time job

Only a week was left for Christmas, everyone has started to decorate our classroom.

As tradition we'd put an old tiny Christmas tree in our classroom, which I could see on every Christmas since kindergarten. The tree would be taken from backyard to the classroom for displaying and it's SORA and my responsibility this year.

By the time we were about to dress our old friend up, I discovered something hadn't been seen for years in a tiny box filled with decors- a red nose.

'Oh! I thought it was lost! SORA, do you still remember this?' I attempted to put it on my noise yet it couldn't fit any more.

'Oh! So it was here!!' SORA took it and put it on, naturally it didn't fit at all.

'You gave this to me during the Christmas party when we were kindergarteners, and told me it's the first pay of your job. But I'm sure it's just something you randomly took from a Christmas tree as you forgot to prepare my present, isn't it?' I grumbled.

'No! It's really my pay for work! I met an old man when I was playing in the mountain that year, he told me that the birth rate of reindeers was very low and he was troubled. He asked if I wanted to work with him so I had been busy with my job for whole day on Christmas eve.'

'Old man...? Christmas eve...? What's your job about?' I pretend to be calm yet in fact I was so excited.

'To take care of reindeers with the old man and pull a snow slide, also throwing presents into chimneys - what a pity that our school has no chimney, or else we may get our presents too!' SORA said causally.

'If...if that wasn't...!' I was stunned.

'The old man came to me this year again! Speaking of this it's almost time for me to help him to pack the presents, please keep me something good in the Christmas eve feast tonight!!' SORA rushed out of the classroom, leaving me who was holding the red nose stupidly behind.

'Whaaaaaaat!? Could that be real!?'
